Help! "I'm finding it hard to find time and space for daily practice in my new life as a Mom. I feel like I'm getting back on track, though I'm nervous that with returning to work 3 days/week I'll lose my regular practice again."

As a man (in other words, having never been a new mother), I fear that any advice I give in this respect would be hopelessly theoretical at best.  Yoga moms around the world, please help me out on this one :O)

    As a mom of two who works, I can understand how tough it is to fit a daily practice in. I recommend modifying the length of your practice to a shorter time frame that fits in with the precious little time you have. Also, waking up early (which I know is hard when you are tired from long nights with babies!) is the best way to ensure that you fit yoga in before the baby is up and needing attention. You can also begin to practice with your baby. Babies love to lie on the mat and watch Mom doing yoga, and once they are older, they can join in. Good luck!

    When you have children, especially when they’re small, you have to adjust your practice unless you have help. Even then, you might want to use that for things like sleep and groceries.

    When my twins were infants, their naps would coordinate long enough for me to do a 25-minute practice. Any more than that at a time was out of the question. But I could find other times during the day to get in one posture here or there. Cobra was a favorite, but whatever works for you.

    It’s good for them to see us practice, even if it’s only for a little bit of time. My children love to do yoga with me now :-)

    As a work at home Mother with a 18 month old daughter I try to co-ordinate my practice, even if it’s only for 15-20 minutes, with her nap.

    On a day that I know I will be especially busy I’ll try to do a few rounds of Sun Salutation in the morning or Rodney Yee’s PM Yoga DVD in the evening after I’ve put my little one to bed.

    Congratulations and well done for wanting to continue with your yoga practice…and for reaching out for support. That alone indicates your willingness and desire for peace and balance. As a working mother of three daughters (all teenagers now, 18 and twins 15) my yoga practcie has fluctated from getting up at 4 am when the house is quiet to grabbing 5 minutes pranayama between night feeds. Be gentle with yourself…bring your awarenss to the fore whenever you can…even if you are boiling the kettle, take the time to stand in the mountain pose, tune in and just be present with your energy. Yoga in bed is another useful way to get a few minutes practice in, before getting out of bed, stretch your right leg then left leg and gentle stretch whole body, you can even practice a seated sun salutation on side of your bed….whatever you do, take your time, slow down and breathe….enjoy the journey. let us know how you get on.     As Director of my company and mother of two young daughters (18 months and 3.5 years) I’m very busy. I fit in my workouts with the girls running around in the morning, but when I do yoga, I appreciate a quieter environment, so I do my yoga practice when they’re napping, at night after they’re in bed, or when they are in daycare two days a week. I used to beat myself up that I wasn’t doing an hour or 90 minutes, like I used to, but I’m over that now. Now, I appreciate every spare moment I have, and I just do what I can. I do some kind of physical exercise every day, and I do yoga probably 3 times a week. Sometimes it’s 20 minutes, other times it’s an hour or more, but I am always grateful for the time I have and I always inwardly thank myself for making the time for my practice. And remember, your kids are only this young once, so enjoy it, as it goes by quickly.

    I became a stay home mom after my first child was born and as soon as he was old enough, I took him to the gym with me. He got to get used to being with other people and I got some well needed “me” time in my favorite yoga class 3 days a week. Keeping a personal practice is the only thing that got me through that first year of transition from the workforce to being a full-time mom. Thank you Legs Up the Wall pose!!! When my kids were toddlers, they loved going to the Kids Club at the Gym to play while I taught yoga. I love both of my children very much, they are now 9 & 11 years old. I feel strongly that you need to make time for yourself for personal growth, take care of yourself, & keep in touch with who you are as an individual. Do what makes you happy & you and your babies will grow together. As the old saying goes, “when momma ain’t happy, nobody’s happy”!
