the branches of yoga

the branches of yoga
What made some followers of every religion escape literalism and embrace a meditative approach?

For example Buddhism has a Mahayana or mystical branch
Christianity has a Christian meditative branch
islam has sufism
Hinduism has yoga
judaism has kaabala

If you look into the meditative branches of every religion it has been peaceful and gives their followers inner guidence. And they also reject the strict fundamentalism and even the religious books of their religions

why are the fundamentalists against the meditative approach?

What makes you think the Theravada Buddhists are in any way less contemplative or are in any way against the contemplative approach? We use the same Noble Eightfold Path that Mahayana Buddhists do, and the last two steps on the Eightfold Path are Samma-sati and Samma-samadhi, or Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration, which comprise the totality of meditative practice.

“Meditate Ananda…this is our instruction to you.”
